Standard deck boards are 5.5" wide (nominal 6"). Joists typically spaced 16" on center. Posts should be 6-8 feet apart with concrete footings below frost line.
Fence Construction
Standard fence posts are 4"×4" spaced 8 feet apart. Use 2-3 horizontal rails depending on height. Picket spacing typically 2-4 inches for privacy.
Material Choices
Pressure-treated lumber is most common and economical. Cedar and composite decking cost more but last longer with less maintenance.
Building Codes
Check local building codes for requirements. Most areas require permits for decks over 30" high. Railing required if deck is 30" or higher above grade.
